We are proud to announce the active participation of representatives from the Centre for Climate and Energy Analysis (CAKE) at the National Centre for Emissions Balancing and Management (KOBiZE) in the celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the Institute of Environmental Protection – National Research Institute.

The 40th anniversary of IOŚ-PIB provided an excellent opportunity to reflect on four decades of building the Institute’s strong position, as well as a chance to honour those who have made a significant contribution to shaping the quality of Polish and EU climate and energy policy.

State honours for KOBiZE and CAKE staff

During the official part of the ceremony, Krzysztof Bolesta, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Climate and Environment, presented IOŚ-PIB staff with honorary awards ‘For Services to Environmental and Climate Protection’. Among those honoured were outstanding experts from our team:

This exceptional honour confirms their expert knowledge and the key role that CAKE plays in setting the direction for analysing the impacts of climate policy.

An expert contribution to the discussion and a presentation of the Adjust project

Our participation in the anniversary event also had a very strong substantive focus. Robert Jeszke, Deputy Director of IOŚ-PIB for emissions management and Head of KOBIZE, chaired a session entitled “Monitoring, Modelling and Environmental Technologies”, during which the authors presented advanced solutions and tools used in initiatives to protect air quality, nature, the climate and the land, including the results of projects carried out at IOŚ-PIB, such as the Central Emissions Database and the national air quality modelling system.

Maciej Cygler moderated the session entitled “Energy transition, local policy and environmental management”. The apparent diversity of topics presented by the authors of the papers – which included urban adaptation plans, strategic noise maps, projects to achieve climate neutrality at the voivodeship level, the use of small nuclear reactors in district heating, and the improvement of environmental policy through the introduction of the ‘commons’ concept , turned out to present a fairly coherent picture of energy and environmental policy, in which diversity of elements is an essential value; a common thread running through the presentations was the demonstration of how important it is to utilise scientific achievements in effectively achieving objectives.

In the exhibition area, event participants were able to familiarise themselves with the results of our research. Zuzanna Różańska and Katarzyna Mazanek from CAKE presented a poster there entitled ‘Assessment of the impacts of the decarbonisation of the Polish economy in the context of the European Union, with particular emphasis on the impact of climate policy on economic growth, the labour market and income distribution’ . The poster was dedicated to the AdJUST project – a successfully completed research initiative carried out under the prestigious Horizon Europe framework programme. The work, prepared as part of the AdJUST project by CAKE/KOBiZE experts, presents the results of analyses based on the integrated CAKE modelling system. The poster illustrates the impact of various climate transition pathways on the economies of Poland and the European Union, with particular emphasis on changes in GDP, the structure of employment and wages across different sectors. The results indicate that, although the decarbonisation process in Poland presents greater challenges due to the economy’s high carbon intensity, it also offers significant opportunities for modernisation, productivity growth and innovation.
