On 17.10.2024, Maciej Pyrka our CAKE expert had the opportunity to present the key analyses of LIFE VIIEW 2050 entitled. ‘VIIEW on EU ETS 2050: Exploring synergies between the EU ETS and other EU climate policy measures – carbon removal, hydrogen, and sectoral transport policy’, at a meeting of the Cepi ETS Issue Group (Confederation of European Paper Industry).
Presentation presented by Maciej Pyrka focused on a critical topic – the inclusion of negative emissions into hasztag EUETS and the need to address residual hasztag emissions that may persist even after full implementation of the EU’s climate policies.
Maciej Pyrka highlighted several essential recommendations for reforming the hasztag EUETS to ensure it continues to play a central role in EU climate policy. These potential reforms include:
A key takeaway from the session was the indispensable role that carbon removals will play in achieving the EU’s climate neutrality goals by 2050. Without large-scale deployment of carbon removal technologies, residual emissions could significantly raise the cost of emissions reduction in other sectors, which might destabilize the broader economy.
The discussion also touched on the broader international context, as Europe strives to meet increasingly ambitious climate targets. In light of the European Commission’s recent recommendations for a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, the analyses conducted by CAKE are vital in charting an efficient and economically viable path forward.
On the 16.10.2024 Marek Antosiewicz our CAKE, KOBIZE Expert (Centrum Analiz Klimatyczno-Energetycznych (CAKE) / Centre for Climate and Energy Analysis) presented selected results of our second LIFE VIIEW 2050 analysis on the interaction of climate policy instruments with the ETS on the ECEMP2024 Conference entitled “Energy Transition Scenarios for a Climate Neutral Europe”. The Conference was held in Brusselss and online.
Marek Antosiewicz took part in the Parralel session 2 entitled “Climate Change Impacts” with the presentation focused on economics of climate policy instruments. The 15 minute presentation he showed that pricing negative emission technologies such as BECCS will significantly reduce emission allowance prices, while at the same time having a positive impact on gdp and consumption.

We invite you to participate in the LIFE VIIEW 2050 Conference “Shaping the Future of the EU ETS: Achieving 2050 Climate Neutrality with Insights from the New European Commission and the Polish Presidency”, which will take place on 25th October 2024 at the headquarter of IOŚ-PIB/KOBiZE in Warsaw, Słowicza 32.
We cordially invite representatives of various types of organisations from Poland and the EU interested in climate and energy policy (central and local government administration, academia, representatives of the energy and industry sectors, banks, think tanks, NGOs). It will be an excellent forum for discussion and public consultation on the main elements of Poland’s energy and climate policy in a broader EU perspective.
We have confirmed prominent panellists including:
The debate on climate and energy policy, and the way in which the ETS will evolve, is critical to tackling climate change and achieving a low-carbon economy by mid-century. During the conference, we will have the opportunity to discuss the climate and energy policy challenges and opportunities for the development of the EU ETS ahead of the newly elected European Commission and in the light of the upcoming Polish EU Presidency. It will also be an opportunity to exchange views with a wide international audience, including representatives of the European Commission from DG Climate Action, as well as scientists from the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and CINEA (European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment). Key representatives of the Polish administration from the Ministry of Climate and Environment and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management will also participate. On this occasion, the results of the LIFE VIIEW 2050 project on the impact of EU ETS changes on the energy, transport and agriculture sectors will be presented.
An indispensable element of the conference will be the opportunity to get acquainted in practice with the results of the projects carried out, which were made possible by obtaining funding for LIFE projects in research activities, without which the Centre for Climate and Energy Analysis (CAKE) at IOŚ-PIB/KOBIZE would not have been established. The possibility of the implementation of the LIFE VIIEW 2050 project and the launch of the new LIFE ENSPIRE project will certainly be an opportunity for the establishment of future co-operation with the guests in the field of climate-energy transition in Poland.
During the conference, the latest results of analyses prepared by the Centre for Climate and Energy Analysis (CAKE), developed within the LIFE VIIEW 2050 project, will be presented. CAKE operates within KOBiZE and conducts research on key aspects of the European Union’s climate and energy policies, providing valuable data and conclusions to support efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
The conference will be held in both Polish and English (translation). For guests, it will be an onsite conference only.
You will receive confirmation of your participation by email, as the number of places is limited.
Please feel free to forward this invitation to anyone in your network who might be also interested.

On 8-10 October 2024, the Carbon Forward Expo 2024 took place in London, with Robert Jeszke, Deputy Director of IOS-PIB, CEO of KOBiZE and CAKE, honored to participate. Together with other experts, Robert Jeszke discussed the key challenges surrounding the launch of ETS2 in 2027 and the obstacles this new market mechanism faces.
During his presentation, CEO CAKE highlighted several important issues regarding the functionality of ETS2:
On the 24.09.2024 CAKE co-organized at the “ECEMF Workshop for the Western Balkans”, which took place in Sarajevo as a side event of the SECW – Sarajevo Energy and Climate Week. The workshop was held both on site and online, which allowed more people to participate.
Emir Fejzic Fejzić, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Marta Rosłaniec, CAKE, welcomed the participants on behalf of the organisers, after which Emir clearly explained the objectives and the formula. After introductory speeches the participants, who came from the Western Balkans region, were challenged to identify the most important problems in the energy sector in their countries and to prioritise what would make the model being developed under ECEMF responsive to real needs.
To help achieve the workshop objectives, key activities within the ECEMF, energy models, and recent publications were presented, followed by engaging breakout sessions that allowed participants to co-design research questions addressing national-level priorities as well as sectoral and regional perspectives. It was a valuable opportunity to exchange knowledge and ideas around the region’s energy and climate needs.
Thanks to all the speakers, participants, and organizers for making this event a success, especially to facilitators of regional workshop groups: Emir Fejzic (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Maryna Henrysson (North Macedonia), Maria Iro (Maro) Baka (Albania), Michał Lewarski (Montenegro), Maciej Cygler (Kosovo), Marta Rosłaniec (Serbia) for their insightful facilitation throughout the sessions.
We appreciate the participation of everyone in contributing to important discussions about the energy future of the Western Balkans.
