    CAKE at UPTAKE Project Meeting

On 7-9 October 2025, Athens hosted an UPTAKE project meeting organised by E3-Modelling Energy-Economy-Environment. The event was attended by representatives of all six work packages, the implementation of which is crucial to achieving the project’s objectives, including finding the best solutions for implementing the carbon capture and storage (CDR) methods and disseminate the knowledge about them. The CAKE team was represented by experts – Michał Lewarski and Grzegorz Gmyrek.

The CAKE team participates in expanding simulation models that examine the development of CDRs in the next decades. CAKE plans to introduce bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) and direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) to its energy model.

CAKE signed up for working groups meetings whose activity will focus on defining technological assumptions of the CDR technologies, including investment and operating costs. The potential benefits for CAKE may include obtaining the data needed to introduce BECCS and DACCS into the energy model. This will allow for the simulation of demand for these technologies over the next few decades.

At the second Stakeholders Workshop, which took place on the last day of the meeting in Athens, business solutions for implementing the CDRs were proposed. Stakeholders also outlined the need to raise public awareness of these technologies. Currently, natural methods such as aforestation are gaining the most support among the public, but in order to achieve climate neutrality goals, new methods such as BECCS, DACCS and Biochar are also required.
