CAKE at CCS Congress, 10.04.2025 in Poznań

Maciej Pyrka, Head of the Strategy, Analysis and Auction Team at KOBIZE/IOŚ-PIB and manager of the LIFE ENSPIRE project, had the opportunity to be a speaker during the plenary session and in the discussion panel during the second Carbon Capture Congress, which took place on 10.04.2025 in Poznań.

During Session II ‘Towards climate neutrality’, Maciej Pyrka gave a presentation entitled ‘The role of removals in achieving the EU’s energy and climate policy goal by 2050’, where he pointed out i.e.: the key role of CO₂ removals (both permanent and temporary), which will be crucial for achieving climate neutrality by 2050 in the EU. He also stressed the need for institutional reform of the EU ETS and new financial and legal instruments to support the supportive development of sinks and monitoring systems.

Maciej Pyrka also provided information on the new LIFE ENSPIRE project led by CAKE/ KOBIZE/IOŚOŚ-PIB, which aims to analyse the feasibility of including new countries in the EU ETS, and the impact of these actions on trade and climate policies in the long-term time horizon beyond 2050. In the next part of the Congress, Maciej Pyrka participated in a panel discussion entitled ‘Leaders Forum III. Supporting the development of CCUS technology in Poland’. The discussion featured Maciej Giers (WiseEuropa), Codie Rossi (Clean Air Task Force) and Paweł Gladysz (AGH Energy Centre, CCUS Poland Association) as moderators. During the panel discussion, Maciej Pyrka underlined the results of analyses by the CAKE Team, which indicate that it will be practically impossible to achieve the net-zero target in the EU in 2050 without the widespread use of neutral technologies known as ‘removals’, including both technologies such as CCS/CCU and negative emissions from BECCS and AFOLU. He also pointed out that in the context of increasing pressure to reduce GHG emissions, CCUS technologies are increasingly seen as an indispensable part of climate policy, especially for sectors that are difficult to decarbonise otherwise. A key change that can accelerate the development of CCUS in Poland is the creation of a predictable and long-term regulatory framework and the integration of this technology into official energy and industrial transformation strategies.
