CAKE at X Polska Chemia Congress

On June 13-14, 2023, the X Polish Chemistry Congress took place at the Lublin Conference Center. The Congress was organized by the Polska Izba Przemysłu Chemicznego (PIPC), and its main objective was to share experiences, best practices, and discuss current issues in the industry, including matters related to the implementation of the new EU climate policy (Fit for 55 package). It is worth emphasizing that the organizers, PIPC, ensured a high level of content and organization for the event. Representing CAKE/KOBiZE, Maciej Pyrka and Maciej Cygler participated in the event.

During the Congress, expert Maciej Pyrka from CAKE/KOBiZE delivered a presentation entitled “Economic Transformation on the Road to EU Climate Neutrality,” which covered topics related to the implementation of the new EU climate policy, changes in the EU ETS system, and the introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Additionally, issues related to the functioning of the EU ETS system beyond 2030 and the formation of CO2 emission prices (marginal abatement costs) were discussed. An important focus of the presentation was also the future of Poland’s industry, transport, and energy mix up to 2050.

The Congress offered participants the opportunity to take part in several thematic sessions, organized into blocks, covering various topics such as legal regulations, investments, financing, and sustainable development in the industry. During these thematic sessions, dozens of speakers had the chance to present their ideas, strategies, and innovations for the chemical industry. One of the significant topics addressed at the Congress was ensuring clean (zero-emission) energy in the future. Within this theme, the role of hydrogen and small nuclear reactors in providing energy for the industry was discussed. Utilizing hydrogen as an energy carrier has the potential to enable an efficient transition to a zero-emission economy and strengthen the competitive position of European and domestic industries.

The Congress provided an excellent opportunity for networking and promoting the results published by the Center for Climate and Energy Analyses (CAKE) and the ongoing LIFE VIIEW 2050 project.
