On November 27-28, 2018, the representative of the LIFE Climate CAKE PL project team took part in the final conference of the LIFE SIDE project.
The main topic of the conference was to present the conclusions of a literature-based report evaluating the EU ETS results prepared under the LIFE SIDE project and to discuss some of the most important issues of the EU ETS reform after 2020.
Participation in the conference, apart from the substantive aspect, also had a networking dimension. As part of the LIFE Climate CAKE PL project, meetings with other beneficiaries of the LIFE program were planned in order to exchange experience in other LIFE projects, with particular focus on projects with similar objectives and topics, in which the LIFE SIDE project fits perfectly.
Participation in the LIFE SIDE conference also gave the opportunity to disseminate the LIFE Climate CAKE PL project among participants interested in the subject of research in the area of energy and climate policy and the EU ETS.

On October 23-24, 2018 experts of the LIFE Climate CAKE Team participated in the largest in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe International Trade Fair for Environmental Protection POL-ECO, during which they have the opportunity to take part in interesting meetings and discussions in the area of scope of the project.
The aim of the POL-ECO is wide openness to issues related to sustainable development, exchange of international experiences, presenting advanced technologies, solutions and products.
Every year, an invitation to the fair is addressing to: representatives of local governments and public administration, fund managers, companies operating in the field of municipal management, representatives of the water and sewage sector, heat and power plants, enterprises and investors from the renewable energy industry, construction, scientific and research institutes, science and technology parks , business incubators, consulting companies, universities and many more.
Members of LIFE Climate CAKE PL team contributed to the international workshop „Climate Recon 2050: Dialogues on Pathways and Policy” on 9th October, 2018 in Warsaw. The workshop has been focused mainly on modelling the energy and climate policy economic impacts by 2050.
The LIFE Climate CAKE PL project contribution has appeared meaningful, since participants had an opportunity to hear about our experiences and findings in two sessions. The advantages and uniqueness of the LIFE Climate CAKE PL project were presented, emphasizing its approach to development of a comprehensive system supporting decision-making in public administration.
Project Coordinator presented the attitude aimed at providing the most effective and comprehensive flows of information and knowledge between experts and public officers and decision-makers. Following this attitude, an involvement of target group representatives already at an early stage is essential for defining assumptions and structure of analytical reports as well as for the effective communicating the energy and climate policy modelling outcomes, satisfying the target group needs.
The workshop has enabled establishing new working contacts with the representatives of the LIFE Climate PATH 2050 as well as sharing experiences of implementing projects co-financed from the LIFE programme. Both projects have been awarded support from the same edition of the LIFE programme. On September 18-20, 2018 experts in modelling participated on the CAPRI training session organised by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala.
On September 18-20, 2018 at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala, a training session was held on the CAPRI agricultural model, in which the experts in agricultural modelling from LIFE Climate CAKE PL project participated, namely: Marian Mraz, dr hab. Adam Wąs, dr Paweł Kobus and dr Vitaliy Krupin.
CAPRI is a partial equilibrium model that focuses its attention on the detailed European Union’s agricultural sector (the supply module), while taking into account possible market changes on a global scale (the market module). The model also allows for estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector.
The training session was conducted by experienced scientists who are also co-creators of the model: Torbjörn Jansson, Peter Witzke, Alexander Gocht, Maria Blanco, Franz Weiss and others. In total, 35 participants took part in the training, mostly experts in the field of agricultural development coming from various institutions of the European Union. In addition to lectures and practical sessions, there was a continuous exchange of knowledge between the participants during the training.
Theoretical and practical knowledge gained during the training will be helpful in building the agricultural model of the LIFE Climate CAKE PL project, in which the partial equilibrium approach is also implemented. The method of including greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture in the CAPRI model, divided according to the types of agricultural activities and the types of production, allows for a better understanding of the possibility of implementation such a solution in the model, which is currently being created at LIFE Climate Cake PL.
Training workshop on energy sector modelling tittled “OSeMOSYS and its pan-EU application OSeMBE” was held in KOBiZE on 24-25 July, 2018. The workshop was led by Mr. Hauke Henke and Mr. Francesco Gardumi from the KTH Royal Institute of Tehnology in Stockholm. The workshop was addressed to experts in modelling from LIFE Climate CAKE PL Team.
The workshop on 24 July was opened by Mr. Robert Jeszke from the KOBiZE – LIFE Climate CAKE PL project coordinator, who presented the main assumptions, current status of works and directions of development of modelling tools within the project. During the same day of the workshop the main speaker – Mr. Hauke Henke presented the most important aspects of modeling of energy systems using the OSeMOSYS platform, on the example of the OSeMBE model covering all European Union countries.
On the second day the workshop was hosted by Mr. Francesco Gardumi, who described in detail the approach used in the OSeMOSYS model for energy storages and cross-border energy transmission. Mr. Hauke Henke also introduced his presentation focusing in addition on most important aspects of modeling the transport sector on the OSeMOSYS platform.
The workshop concluded with a productive summary debate between the participants and speakers. The main outcomes of the workshop concern further actions related to the construction of the energy and transport models. Thanks to the workshop, a team of experts in modelling working within LIFE Climate CAKE PL had the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with experts specializing in modelling the energy sector.
